Farewell to Manzanar

Farewell to Manzanar

What I’ve created here is my interpretation of the things they, the internees, carried (ha) to the internment camps. On the other side of the model is the actual amount that the U.S. government provided to the inmates upon leaving the camp at the end of the war: A paltry $25 and a bus ticket. Also to be noted prisoners weren’t allowed to bring personal items into the camp, so everything they brought was confiscated, but the point is that those interned had to pack up their life in a suitcase or a bag and be shipped off to an unknown destination. While these are material possessions and don’t matter so much in the long run, everything the internees owned was taken from them not only at the beginning of the camps, but also at the end when their sense of normality in the camps was torn from them again and they were forced to start another life in a highly prejudiced community.
